NOVEMBER CLASS FOCUS: Trees Globe Challenge
On the first Friday of each month, families come together at Through The Trees to become citizen scientists! Join us as we participate in a citizen science project for GLOBE, measuring tree height. We will also be looking at various tree leaves.
For this project, the use of a mobile device is needed, with the GLOBE Observer app downloaded. Other parts of our class will not require a device.
Steps include selecting a tree and using your device to measure the angle from the bottom to the top of the tree, walking to the tree and counting your steps (to determine the distance) and reporting on surface conditions. The app will use that information to calculate an estimate of the tree’s height. Optional steps are taking a photograph of the tree and measuring the circumference of the tree. Learn more about this GLOBE initiative HERE.
We will also be offering a leaf activity with fall leaves!
Class is 10-12 and families are invited to pack a picnic lunch and stay for lunch and free play from 12-1pm. Outhouse bathrooms available.
All ages welcome! This is not a drop off program. Parents and children learn together.
COST: $25 per Family
Payment is non-refundable. If Through the Trees cancels the event due to extreme weather or other reasons, a make up date will be offered. Guests will be notified via email early on the morning of this class is there is a cancellation. Events/classes may be held in rain/snow, and cancelled only in more extreme weather, so please plan accordingly.
Classes support our Youth Scholarship Fund for nature programs. Thank you!
